Context — What is a Parador? Paradores de Turismo is a state-owned Spanish hotel chain that operates in historic buildings — castles, monasteries, convents, and palaces — across the country. In recent years, Paradores has been commissioning interior design renovations through public tender, updating the interiors of these iconic buildings while preserving their architectural heritage. Winning and executing a Parador project means competing in a public procurement process and delivering to the standards of one of Spain's most recognised hospitality brands.

The brief Redesign the interior of the Parador de Bielsa, located in the heart of the Pyrenees near Monte Perdido — one of Spain's most dramatic mountain landscapes.

The concept — El Carnaval de Bielsa — The Carnival of Bielsa is one of the oldest and most powerful folk traditions in the Pyrenees. Its mythological figures — the trangas, the bear, the madama — are not costumes. They are living culture, symbols of a community's identity rooted in the mountain for centuries.

The design departs from the idea that Monte Perdido is not just rock and stone — it is desire, memory, and the living culture of the people who have inhabited these valleys since the beginning.

Two distinct worlds coexist in the hotel:

• Common areas — inspired by the wild, festive spirit of the carnival figures. Rich tapestry, enveloping textures and patterns, warm and theatrical spaces where guests gather, share stories, and feel sheltered by the mountain.

• Bedrooms — inspired by the madama, the purest figure of the carnival. Luminous, serene, and calm. Spaces designed for rest and quiet reflection.

The result is a hotel where every room tells a story — and where the mountain speaks through the walls.
